Kidera receives two Boreholes

During his visit in Kidera on 10th November 2023, the President of Kolschowsky Foundation  Mr. Tim Kolschowsky promised to construct  a borehole at Kitaidhumba primary School and Kidera Trading Center  respectively to solve the problem of water scarcity in the area. These boreholes are part of the WASH program implimented by DLLN – Uganda throughout Busoga.

Two Boreholes have been constructed in Kitaidhumba Primary School and Kidera trading Center, Buyende district by DLLN Uganda in partnership with Center for sustainable rural livelihood (IOWA State University Uganda) with funding from Kolschowsky Foundation .

The borehole constructed at Kitaidhumba Primary School will serve  the school and 398 households with approximately 1540 individuals, while the one in Kidera trading center will serve more than 5213 households in kidera town council and the neighbouring areas , with a population of approximately 21,089 individuals.

The boreholes will be commisioned  very soon as water user committees selection are in progress whose responsibility will be to oversee the sustainance of water operations in the communities. DLLN – Uganda will also give the communities hand pump tool kits to support them during any repairs as part of ownership for a sustainable and self-reliant community.

The Coordinator of DLLN-Uganda WASH Program Mr. Wansadya Joshua Mbodogo  said that he is sensitizing the community and water user committee members to ensure that after handing over the boreholes to them, the community will continuously access clean and safe drinking water for their good health. He further says that has  emphasized the need to have the water sources clean and ownership by the community.

“Access to safe and clean water means we shall all have improved health because without clean water we shall fall sick and loose life. We want the locals to keep the boreholes clean,  water collection utensils clean, wash  hands and drink clean water always. We also want the community to repair the boreholes when they break down and also the committees should have responsibility of ensuring that they own this as their community project.” Joshua  said.

Eng. Makooma  a Hand pump Specialist and Boreholes consultant appreciated DLLN-Uganda  for providing safe water in their communities. He further said; “I thank DLLN-Uganda for their tremendous efforts in improving the livelihoods of the people of Kidera by giving them clean and safe water. ”

Mr. Tezikuba Patrick  Isiah, the Mayor of Kidera Town Concil has lived in Kidera throughout his entire life. He had never seen a borehole constructed in Kitaidhumba. He further explains; “Locals from Kitaidhumba have been fetching water from hand made shallow wells and swamps because the boreholes are  very far and they have been sharing the water with animals. The wells and swamps are open and not protected at all. When it rains, all water carrying all sorts of dirty things ends up in the water sources. people have been falling sick and getting stomach complications but the constructed borehole has now given us Joy. The water is clean and clear.” Tezikuba is happy.

As the Mayor, Tezikuba said he will ensure that all funds the community members have accepted to contribute by each house hold towards the maintenance of the borehole will be kept in safe hands and accountability will always be presented to all the members during monthly village meetings.

Above all, proper records shall be kept in books of accounts that they will always be  presented to the Secretary of the Water User Committee during the committee meetings. “Mothers, children, the elderly and differently abled people will benefit most since they no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water.”Tezikuba said.
